The collection contains correspondence and some legal documents. Most of the letters convey family news. Topics include Indian raids, land transactions and settlement, agriculture, slavery, the University of Virginia, the Civil War, Virginia and occasionally national politics, church conventions and epidemics. There is an issue of the Monthly magazine or gentlemen's miscellany, Staunton, Va. 1803. The correspondents are chiefly members of the Gilmer and Breckinridge families as well as John Hartwell Cocke, Edmund Pendleton and Edmund Jennings Randolph.
